It's NOT Startitis, I Swear!
Since just before Christmas, I have been wanting to make the hubby's grandmother a prayer/comfort shawl (and didn't write it down, so I forgot about it). Brian's grandfather was recently diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and has only months to live. I just feel the need to send her something infused with love and hope and peace that she will be able to wrap herself in during this time and afterwards. They are like my own grandparents (maybe more so!) and I love them so much it hurts.
She's not a lacey kinda gal, and I sort of wanted something with a little more weight to it, anyway. I like feeling the weight of a wrap on my shoulders. So, I Googled my little heart out and found the Candle Flame Shawl. It is such a gorgeous stitch pattern and reminds me of lighting candles as a symbol of hope. It's also very soothing, tactilely. I immediately bopped out to the LYS and found some beautiful "dusty" plum colored Baby Cashmerino to use. The pattern calls for a bulky wool, but the stitch is so dense I think it'd be able to stand up on its own if I used bulky! I want drape and I'm gonna get it with this for sure.
And I'm definitely falling prey to the "triangle shawl from the point up" trick. It's so quick and easy & satisfying--and before you know it, the number of stitches is growing exponentially and it starts taking a loooooong time to finish a row. But it's so beautiful already that I just don't care. :)
*Oh, and I bought some really nice merino/cashmere to make a hat for grandpa!

The flash really flattened out the stitch--there's a fingertip-sized little divot in the middle of each flame. The pattern link has a picture with better contrast. *Oh, and there are two mistakes in the pattern. If anyone ever wants to use it, let me know and I'll send you the corrections. :)

Amanda, not only is this absolutely beautiful, it's such a sweet idea, too. Mema will love it.
Beautiful shawl! I would love to know the corrections. Thanks.
I'm so sorry to hear about DH's grandfather, Amanda. I think a prayer shawl is a wonderful idea and a beautiful gesture that DH's grandmother will love and appreciate. And what a GORGEOUS choice!! That is such a beautiful, beautiful shawl!! I've googled my heart out before, but I've never seen this shawl pattern and I'm completely enamored with it. I've already bookmarked it and filed it in the queue. ;-) Take care! :-)
Anna--I'll go ahead and post the pattern with corrections tomorrow in my sidebar.
Chris--I'd never seen the pattern before, either, but as soon as I did, I knew it was "the one". :)
